MODEL MAKING

Posted by archi-sketch On May - 7 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

Everytime i went to shopping complex and saw ‘it’ i got excited…i went straight to ‘it’,took a look and didn’t realise that i spent almost 15 minutes just looking at ‘it’…(no wonder the sale person thought i’m interested in buying it and treated me as a potential customer!!…:D)..i almost forgot my main mission- the jumbo sale upstair!.

Since my post title is Model Making, of course i’m talking about model..Opps!i’m not talking about the vogue+gorgeous+beautiful+handsome ‘= super model here…i’m talking about architecture model.Model making is all about making the model. The model is made by a model maker. Architecture firms usually hire the model makers to make models of projects to sell their designs to builders and investors. From here, in spite of looking at the printed 3-d perspective, the client or people (read as potential customer) can have a better look at the model itself. The models are traditionally hand-made using the traditional tools like cutter, board, etc or using high-tech tools like laser cutter.

Evertime i looked at the models, i was mesmerized by ‘them’.It was very neatly done! and not to forget very detail.Maybe they took monthsss to do it! Since i was a student, model making was (and still) my favourite.Everytime i finished my design,i was so eager to do the model making.Unfortunately, most of the time, the models weren’t complete since i was (and still) a perfectionist. The cutting edges must be neatly cut,the staircase must be accurate,bla…bla..bla.However, i’m satisfy since all the models was done by me (i never hire anyone to do it for me!!)..all by myself!!

me with my unfinished special study model - the egg structure..how i wish i could complete the model since it will be the last model that i make before graduation..

Ernadia -the best student with her finished Special Study Model..damn!!she always finish it on time!..:D

Fahimi's model..although he is an artist at that time,he still able to finish it on time ..also!!

my model making process at the studio..instead of drinking Livita,Nescafe,Red Bull,Tongkat Ali, i just drank soya all night to stay awake.is it weird?

my unfinished model..Y_Y

another snap....

another snap..still unfinished!! Y_Y

I always wonder how the model maker do the model making? So, it was almost like a dream became true when my classmate (Studio 1 Bachelor of Architecture UiTM Batch May -Dec 2006) and i went to Faculty of Architecture of University Of Chulalongkorn,Bangkok, Thailand for a study trip. What attracted us the most was when we saw a collection of model making done by the students. The models were superb and very impressive!! Unlike in Malaysia, the students were formally taught on how to do the model making. They have a class for model making and workshops which were equipped with the tools! (Suddenly i was thinking about moving out to this university just to learn about model making..LOL)

We were brought to an exhibition room that exhibited all the models which were done by the students. We were mesmerized by the models and snapped picture like crazy!.Once again i would like to say AWESOME!!SUPERB!!VERY IMPRESSIVE!!..Did i mention it was almost like a dream became true? Why i said almost?I said so because we were not able to see the process of model making done by the students there.Since it was noon, most of the student were out for a break!!! :(

Although i’ve already finished my study in architecture, i still willing to study on model making..hopefully Department of Architecture of KKTM Pasir Mas will have a class/ subject specialised in model making. If so,i’m more than willing to participate!!

The question is :
How do you improve your model making technique? Care to share here?

Mock Teaching Interview

Posted by archi-sketch On April - 4 - 20102 COMMENTS

The word ‘mock’ itself tell us what it is actually. When i was called for an interview, they asked me to prepare a 10 minutes mock teaching. Being an architecture student exposed me to do a mock-up model.Frankly speaking, upon hearing word ‘mock’ reminded me of my mock-up model…:D So,at that time i was thinking that maybe it would be a teaching act. Then, i found out that i was right..The purpose of mock teaching is to demonstrate our ability to communicate (or shall i say babble..:D?) in a classroom situation..

The mock teaching is differs from university to university. Maybe before your scheduled appointment, you will receive a list of topic for your 10 minutes lesson. (Don’t worry! the topics will be typical topic in your field). Within that time you should know (practice+acting) how to present the topic in the “class”. A white board will be given and you may start your lesson.. (or your “acting”..:D)

Another one is using the slide show..I was so lucky to get this type of mock teaching .I was already asked to prepare my 10 minutes presentation in a pen drive over the phone)..So, before the interview i just gave it to them to be copied into their laptop..It is advisable for you to made as many copies as possible (in 2003 and 2007 powerpoint version) because one never might know what will happen…(there was a file that couldn’t be opened and the candidate only had 1 copy in the pen drive only!!..so, i guess you don’t want the same horror incident happen to you!)

In my case, i was given 10 minutes to “teach” in front of the panels. I still remembered the moment! There were 4 panels in front of me.One of them was my own lecturer and the other 3 were from administration department. (i believed they were Dr,Prof Madya,Prof…etc). They acted as my “students” in a classroom. So, the acting began…i greated the “class” and introduced myself (in a shuddered voice i guessed..:D)..During the “class” suddenly 1 of my “student” threw a question on me..So, the Q&A session (actually it was a “killing” session) started to begin there..

Of course the questions were regarding the lesson presentation….It was a 10 minutes presentation, but it didn’t mean that you had the chance to show all of your 30 slides powerpoint presentation…I just prepared 10 slides and made a lot of elaboration and received praise from my own lecturer (of course he told me after the session, not during the session lah)…so, my advise is, just prepare 10-15 slides only.(You will be be lucky enough if your presentation stop at your 3rd slide before the Q&A begin..hahah!!)

Only after the mock teaching, an interview will take place…(Only those who made it during mock up presentation, will go to this stage)

Archiday 2010
Archiday which stands for Architecture Day is held annually by Department of Architecture. There will be many activities involving the architecture students + lecturers = society. I’m so excited talking about Archiday 2010 right now. So,i guess i’ll skip the rests (the events…performance…bla,bla..).

On 18th-21st March 2010, Archiday 2010 was held at Pantai Melawi, Bachok, Kelantan. Here goes the exciting part….Unlike the other past Archiday, a new event was introduced by the department (the ideas came out from En. Hadi Mahmud who is Pn. Rohayu Daud’s husband (the head of architecture department) and Pn Rohayu herself. Starting from this year, Sand Castle Competition will be the major event for Archiday. Department of Architecture (KKTM Pasir Mas) was the first college/ organization ever in Malaysia that held this kind of competition. For beginning, the students were divided into 18 groups. Each group will be supervised by a lecturer.

“LEGACY” had been chosen as the theme for Archiday 2010 and also for Sand Castle Competition. So, the students were required to build 1.5 meter tall structure/building based on this theme. As a mentor for group 9 and 10 i was responsible to supervise my own groups. Group 9 had chose kolek or sampan & Group 10 chose Great Wall of China (of course they ended up great by getting the 2nd place!!!..).The first place goes tu Coliseum group…it was built collapse with a volcano in the middle of it to symbolize the destruction of the coliseum by the volcano..so,here 18 of the structures which competed in Sand Castle Competition.

alhamdulillah..the organization of sand castle competition can be considered as a success despite the challenges we faced .I was so worried when the rain started to fall in the evening, night and early morning.alhamdulillah the rain didn’t destroy the structures.in fact, the rain made the sand castle stronger!! Unfortunately the Malaysia Book of Records and the medias (except Sinar Harian and RTM) couldn’t make it to this competition. Without the presence of Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) to acknowledge, recognise and record all achievements (yes, of course i mean the structures that we built), i felt (and still feel) dissapointed. The Sand Castle Competition was the first one ever held in Malaysia but MBR wasn’t there to recognise and record it!!
So,the question here is:
SHOULD THE SAND CASTLE COMPETITION BE HELD NEXT YEAR??
